Drugstore makeup is an infinitely improving market. What with brands like Sleek and Freedom creating affordable, professional-standard products, and Makeup Revolution churning out controversial yet effective dupes at a fraction of high-end prices, there is very little room for a customer to go wrong. One of my current and long-standing favourite brands in the drugstore spectrum is MUA; my makeup bags are practically overflowing with their catalogue, from my wide array of their Velvet Lip Lacquers to my current mascara.
A few weeks ago, I fell in love with a shade in their range of highlighters. I already owned the Undress Your Skin highlighter in ‘Iridescent Gold’, ‘Rosewood Glimmer’ and ‘Golden Afterglow’, but when I saw ‘Pearlescent Sheen’, I knew I needed it. It was unfortunately out of stock, so I requested a stock alert, and when I got the email through to let me know it was available, I snapped it up right away.
It’s every bit as lovely as I imagined; my pictures don’t do it justice. The shade is a very pale blue-white with a subtle, tasteful pinky-purple shift when it catches the light in the right way. It looks so pretty on the skin, and can be built up from very soft and delicate to a more intense, almost-colourful glow. The shimmer is also really fine, so it doesn’t look chunky on the skin and give your cheeks that weird ruddy kind of look that other highlighters can result in.
I think the actual compact looks really cute as well. The packaging is the same as the other shades, minimal white with a clear plastic lid and bold lettering, simple, and nothing bright or tacky. It’s not the heaviest of materials, of course, but it feels sturdy enough providing you don’t lob it down the stairs, and the fastening is nice and secure. Most of all I love the swirl design embossed on the powder; it gives the overall compact an elegant touch and it shows that care and attention has gone into its creation.
I have a looooot of highlighters, so I kinda know what I’m talking about, and this one is one of my absolute favourites. I’ve been wearing it pretty much everyday since it arrived in the post, and I’m still obsessed with it. Best three quid I’ve spent so far this year!
