My Resolutions for 2017

It may surprise some of you to know this, but I am actually quite an optimistic, glass-half-full kind of person, despite my near-constant snarky running commentary. Just about every year of my life, I’ve made a new year’s resolution, the fact that I’ve never stuck to one of them meaning very little. This year, however, was a bit different, as I reached the end of December without wanting to change anything too urgently and entered 2017 with no immediate convictions. Looks like old habits really do die hard, though, as I’ve ended up giving it some thought after all.

1. Start treating my body better.

In the spring last year, I started running a little every other day, and even that little bit of effort improved my fitness levels more than I expected. I started enjoying that time to myself, and reaped the benefits of exercise and fresh air in the form of lower anxiety, more sleep, extra muscle, and losing a couple of stubborn pounds. As it got colder, I kinda pared off it a bit, and the festive period has seen my usually-rather-healthy eating habits go completely down the toilet. I’d like to change this by restarting my running habit and basically cutting down on the amount of chicken kievs I eat every week. I’ve also dug out a couple of dumbbells and my mum’s old weighted hula-hoop, so they’re going to come in handy. Lastly, my water intake needs to drastically increase by about a million percent, so if I stop drinking tea and start drinking water instead, I should be all set.

2. Get back into prose-writing.

At the moment my life is missing a project. I go to work, I go on my driving lessons, I write posts for this blog, with family and social time in between. It’s fine, but honestly sometimes it feels like there’s not a lot of direction. I’ve said before that I used to be very into writing — I wrote at least the start of about a million novels and short stories when I was younger — but this was another habit that pared off, this time while I was at uni. I think because there were so many distractions, it was hard to become as engrossed in thoughts of plot and characterisation as I used to now. Now, however, I have that extra time and consideration back to myself, and bashing out a few short stories and/or chapters of longer pieces is something I would really like to do with that time. Hopefully by 2018 I’ll have at least conceived the idea of something worth writing!

3. Stop buying scented candles

Yeah. Not a huge revolutionary turning point in my emotional well-being, but definitely a step that needs to be taken. I have hoards of them — on top of my wardrobe, on my dresser, on my side table, in boxes under my bed, too many to justify buying another. If I don’t do something, you’ll see me on My Strange Addiction before long!

  3. Love this post! Think we can all learn from it. I find I drink more water when I have a cute bottle to keep it in. Sounds crazy and ridiculous, but what can I say, the cuter it is the more likely I am to use it and keep it with me 24/7. good luck with your resolutions

    1. I’m exactly the same! My friend bought me a cute owl-shaped mason jar with a lid and straw for Christmas and I’ve found myself refilling it constantly!

  4. I hope you do get back into creative writing – I experienced the exact same thing while I was at uni and felt like I had no time to write things I actually wanted to. Since graduating in the summer I’ve gotten back into it and I love it so hopefully you can do the same!

    Also, I feel you on the candles issue – it’s so easy for the collection to get out of hand haha!

  5. Great resolutions! I definitely need to eat better and drink more water too! Do you not burn your candles? I go through a large candle in a little less than a week!

    1. I do burn my candles but not as often as I should! I need to set myself a rule that I can’t buy a new candle until I’ve finished one I already have! x

Ahahaha so funny that one of your resolutions is to stop buying candles ๐Ÿ™Š Getting back into writing sounds like a really lovely one – there’s something really peaceful about writing for yourself and it not going up online straight away… It’s something I would really like to get back to as well! Running is such a great way to keep fit and it’s free! Way better than paying for the gym and being indoors. Good luck with your resolutions, girlie, they sound really nice โ˜บ๏ธ xx
